Native Roots

Sutiaba is the largest and most organized of the indigenous communities on Nicaragua's Pacific Coast, claiming indigenous identification despite the fact that many of the external attributes of ethnic identity such as traditional language, religious rituals, and ethnic dress have been stripped away.

Adventure to the reserve

Sutiaba boasts numerous valuable historical sites, comprising natural landscapes and architectural and urban elements. Notable among these are El Cerro de Oro or Cerro de los Vientos, Río de Los Aposentos, the indigenous niches, the indigenous puddles, the ruins of Sutiaba (including Ermita Santiago, Ermita San Sebastián, Ermita Andrés, and the Parish of Veracruz), San Juan Bautista Church, the Adiact Archaeological Museum, the Tamarindón, the Hermitage of San Pedro, and the Marina Ma Community Museum.

Sutiaba Church

The Church of San Juan Bautista de Sutiaba was constructed in 1700 and is regarded as the largest and most monumental church after the Cathedral of León. This church stands out as one of the most interesting examples of Nicaraguan Baroque, where wood predominates in its architectural elaboration. In the center of the church's roof remains embedded the effigy of the sun, representing the Sun God, which the Spaniards supposedly used to attract the natives to profess their faith.

Sutiaba has a rich tradition of myths and legends that make it a true cultural and literary gem. Among the prominent myths is that of Princess Xochitl and her father, the cacique Adiact, who were said to be hung from the legendary Tamarindón tree. Among the existing legends, we can mention the Golden Crab, the Nahualt Carriage, the Headless Father, the Cadejo, the Monkey Woman, and Arrechavala.
